The first part of the St. Olav Waterway pilgrimage hike was an absolutely wonderful experience, in no small part to the efforts of Nordic Pilgrim. The variety of environments in which you hike, eat, and stay make the hike constantly interesting. There are urban areas, beautiful countryside, and lots and lots of water!
Try to let go of the expectations of others and yourself about what a “pilgrimage” hike is supposed to be and just let it unfold. The best lessons are the unexpected ones. Quiet your spirit when you can and pay attention. Be curious. Be kind. Don’t focus on the miles ahead of you or behind you, only on the steps you’re taking right now.
While there were too many highlights for all to be mentioned, here are just a few.

Turku
The Cathedral of Turku is extraordinary in it simple lines and powerful beauty. Don’t miss it and make sure to get your first stamp here.
You don’t want to miss the Turun Kaupahalli… the Turku Market Hall. It has GREAT food that you can eat there and also take with you on the trail.
Be careful walking on the wooden planks across the marsh outside of Turku on the way to Pargas. And the rocks on top of the long wooden stairway are slippery when it rains! We have the skinned knee to prove it!

Pargas
The people at Waudevilla were VERY kind and made a truly amazing salmon soup. Try to have a meal at Hunger & Torst in Pargas. The food is wonderful and Patrick, the owner and chef, is a great guy. The Jazz Café also had great food.
When you’re on the ferry from Pargas to Pensar, don’t get off the ferry at the first stop… Pensar is the second stop!

Nagu
The ferry from Pensar to Nagu requires a call the previous day to inform them you’ll be embarking on the ferry.
The hike from Pensar to Nagu was beautiful, but did involve walking across a couple of bridges on busy highways. Pay close attention!
The stone Pilgrimage trail marker at the Cathedral is just beyond the stone wall at the back of the Cathedral.

Korpo
Minna at Hjalmar’s in Korpo is SO sweet and kind. The food and accommodations were as wonderful as she is!

Kökar
The rustic cabin, GREAT food, and very kind and helpful hosts at Sandvik Gästhamn made Kökar one of our favorite places. Take a bike ride to the church in Hamnö and see the ancient Franciscan monastery. Walk around the area and down to the sea. The view is spectacular and there is a powerful yet peaceful and serene “feel” to the whole place.
